Hello Bowling Fans. Welcome to the Forum 'Fgreco'. ExBronx is absolutely right. The first digit in Columbia serial numbers is the year. The second digit is the month. There was a Yellow Dot produced in the Urethane era. But I have to agree with you the you have a vintage 1976 Yellow Dot made in September.

YES, cut and pasted from USBC pdf equipment manual pg 4;
http://usbcongress.http.internapcdn..s/ESManual.pdf
Any bowling ball used in USBC certified competition must be approved and identifiable as a ball
listed on the “Approved Ball List” located on the Equipment Specifications page on www.BOWL.
com with the exception of House Balls. Additionally, for identification purposes, each ball must
have some form of serial number (this may be engraved or re-engraved by the bowler); the
ball’s original brand and model names or logos must also be engraved on each ball (these may
not be re-engraved by the bowler). No additional logos or designs may be added to a previously
approved ball without written consent from the USBC

How many times have you resurfaced the ball?

Re: serial number question
Hopefully you have the Serial Number written down. If so all you need to do is have it engraved back on the ball. Perfectly legal for the bowler to do that per rule. But you need to have the serial number in the ball. I am certain it will never be an issue UNLESS you win some money and someone notices there are no numbers....then you will wish otherwise!

Re: serial number question
Somewhat off topic, but this is so strange to me. I've had balls I resurfaced 20 times and never lost a serial number, but this ball gets resurfaced once and loses the whole thing? Man, talk about weird luck. Was this a traditional spinner or a Haus?

If the ball is lighter than 15lb, it could be that the ball diameter is smaller and the engraving is shallower than heavier balls.
I have a Brunswick ball ring and have seen that 15's for the most part are close to the diameter and the light weight ones are noticeably smaller. Most 16's don't pass thru or barely pass.

Re: serial number question
The ball must have a serial number, it doesnt have to be the original number. Any number added for identification purposes.

Re: serial number question
I have an old lightning storm where there is only a small portion of the Storm logo remaining, all other logos and serial number are gone. It's just a purple ball now.

This happened to me. Qualified on Day 1 in an ABT; the checked balls to start the second session and discovered my old Magic Circle had had the serial sanded off. Luckily, they just had me take it to the pro shop and put on a unique number ('BR-549' for you TV connesouirs) and fined me $5.

Lol! Funny how money changes things! It's like shoes. Prior to regionals allowing all shoes you had to have PBA equipment. 99.9% of the time you could get away with the other shoes...until you win!
